Obituary

DR. JAMES BERNARD HANLEY, 80, died in Toronto on February 24, 1968. Born in December 1887 in Orillia, Ontario, he had his early schooling in Midland, Ontario. He graduated M.B. from the University of Toronto in 1915, before going overseas with the Canadian Army Medical Corps for three years.

Dr. Hanley did postgraduate work in otolaryngology in Boston and Vienna. He was on the medical staff of The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, until his retirement in 1955, when he became an honorary consultant to the hospital.

Well-known as an athlete, he played for the O.H.A. intermediate and junior hockey teams in Midland in 1908-9-10. He was chosen for the O.H.A. all-star junior hockey team during this time. One of the few men to receive three senior 'T's in first year at the University of Toronto, he won these awards in hockey, baseball and lacrosse.

Dr. Hanley is survived by his widow, the former Ruth Bawden; a son, Dr. W. B. Hanley; a daughter, Mary (Mrs. L. K. Lodge) and a brother, Dr. E.G.S. Hanley. He also leaves five grandchildren.
