FORTRESS STANDING ORDERS.


SECTION I. - TIME GUN, REVEILLE, TATTOO, GARRISON DUTIES, PIQUETS, RETREAT, GUARDS

TIME GUN, REVEILLE, RETREAT, TATTOO.

1. A time gun will be fired daily at the Citadel at 1 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

2.     Reveille will be sounded throughout the year as follows:

3.     On Sundays reveille will be sounded at 6.30 a.m. from 1st November to 30th April, and at 6 a.m. from 1st May to 30th September.

4.     The hours for retreat will be notified weekly in fortress orders. Tattoo will be sounded at 10 p.m.

GARRISON DUTIES.

5.     Garrison weekly duties commence on Monday at 10 a.m.

6.     The garrison duties are carried out in accordance with a roster kept by the D.A.A.G., to whom all reports and communications connected with garrison duties will be made.

7.     When an officer is once detailed in orders for garrison duty, no exchange can be permitted Without authority from the D.A.A.G. All applications for such exchange will be made by 12 noon the day previous to the duty being taken on.

8.     The F.O. of the week will be furnished from the headquarters office by 10.30 a.m. daily, with a list of the garrison week. guards, detailing the composition and commander of each.

9.     The following is the detail of duties:

(i)     Visit the guards as detailed.

(ii)     Visit the station hospital after 12 noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; complaints will be included in the report.

(iii)     Attend fires and carry out the duties laid down in paras. 107-110.

(iv)     Assume command of the piquets in case of riot or alarm.

(v)     Examine the garrison guard reports and forward them daily to the D.A.A.G. by 10.30 a.m.

(vi)     Forward the report given in Appendix 1 by 10.30 a.m. on Monday.

10.     The F.O. will not leave the fortress during his tour of duty, and will arrange that he can be found at short notice.

11.     Guards will not be visited in a sleigh or carriage.

12.     A N.C.O. not below the rank of corporal, will be detailed as F.O's orderly by the corps furnishing the F.O. He will perform the following duties:

(i)     Report to the F.O. coming on duty before 10 a.m. on Monday.

(ii)     Furnish the F.O. with the various guard reports at 9.30 a.m. daily.

(iii)     Report at headquarters office at 10 a.m. daily and obtain the duty slip for the F.O.

13.     A F.O. will be appointed weekly as visitor to the military prison. He will perform the following duties:

(i)     Inspect the prisons, see each prisoner, reporting any complaints.

(ii)     Inspect the journals and books of the prison, affixing his initials to the last entry in each.

(iii)     Examine the records of punishment, and of the occasions on which means of restraint have been used by the chief warder or medical officer.

(iv)     On completion of his tour of duty render a report on A.F.C. 371 (obtainable from the chief warden) to the D.A.A.G.

14.     A medical officer will be detailed by the principal medical officer to visit the prison; he will carry out his duties as laid down in the "Rules for Military Prisons," paras. 42-56.

GARRISON GUARDS.

15.     Guards will mount at 9.30 a.m. daily.

16.     The detail of guards mounted will be found in Appendix IV.

17.     The garrison sergeant-major will visit the garrison Garrison guards to see that the guard rooms, utensils, boards of order, &c., are clean and in good order. He will report irregularities.

18.     The garrison guard reports will be collected as laid down in para. 12.

19.     Ammunition will be in custody of the different guards Ammunition as under:

20.     The ammunition is not to be carried by sentries, unless ordered by the D.A.A.G., but will be handed over to the safe custody of the N.C.O. in charge of the guard, who will be held responsible for the same; it will be handed by him to the N.C.O. commanding the relieving guard, a certificate being entered in the guard report that it was handed over correct.

21.     Commanders of guards will give every assistance to the military and civil police, taking the name of the person applying for it. Should the guard consist of more than 1 N.C.O. and 3 men, the commander will use his discretion in detaching a party not exceeding 1/3 of the strength of the guard; he will on no account quit his guard himself.

22.     Fuel for the use of the garrison guards will be delivered at the guard rooms daily, Sundays excepted, by a N.C.O. struck off duty for that purpose, who will obtain the signature of the commanders of the guards to the quantity delivered. The fuel for Sundays will be delivered on Saturdays.

PIQUETS.

23.     Garrison piquets will be furnished when ordered by the D.A.A.G., regimental piquets at the discretion of officers and duties.
